My Trip to Parliament by Evan Bond, aged 21

I left home for Euston at 45 past 7 in the morning. Once there we met Helen at 10 past 8 following getting  breakfast.   When I got in the thick of the tube I found it was very crowded.  I was worried a woman would get her face cut off at one moment.  When I got to Parliament security was very tight.  There were at least two armed guards by the entrance.  Once we were in the building, we had to find the group we were going to be with.  There were many other groups who were also there.  Eventually we found the group and the tour guide arrived.  The tour guide joked that Parliament was both the most dangerous and safest place.

The tour guide took us through the House of Lords and the House of Commons.  There were many paintings and statues and one of them I thought was like Yoda.  I was interested to learn there were microphones in the seats and hanging above the House of Commons so the debate could be heard.  We weren’t allowed to sit down on the seats.  In the House of Lords there was a throne so expensive even the Queen couldn’t afford it.

We also viewed an exhibition on the Suffragettes.  I found one particular part of the exhibition very interesting where you could poke your head down a cardboard wall into the house of commons.  It showed that women could not view the House of Commons well but, ironically, it was easier to hear the debates.

Toward the end of the tour we met an MP called Catherine West whose constituency is Hornsey and Wood Green.  I managed to ask her some question.  She took us to the House of Commons where we saw the Chancellor of the Exchequer, Philip Hammond behind bullet proof glass.  The MP asked the Chancellor some questions.  I also saw the Speaker, John Bercow.  This was my favourite part of the visit because I felt I was at the centre of government and seeing things I had never seen before.  We had lunch in the Parliament canteen.  I had a sandwich, crisps and a drink.  We left and I met my mother and sister at Euston station.    I found the day extremely interesting and enjoyable.
