Courses for young people
Work Skills Learning partners with The Southover Partnership to provide education for young people who are currently out of school. We are able to offer individual, personalised courses for children aged 11-17 and work across multiple sites to provide specialist training facilities. The courses we offer are listed below:
Animation
Working in animation gives young people the chance to express themselves through an artistic medium, as well as learning computer skills which are a vital ability to have in today’s workplace.
Business studies
This course is aimed at helping young people build up the knowledge and skills required to work in a business or start their own. What is profit? How do we make more of it? Is profit always good? How do entrepreneurs raise money? How does business change the world? It includes topics on marketing, personnel, finance and production.
Qualifications available include GCSE Business Studies, Business & Economics.
ICT
Information Communication Technology is so important today – for both personal and professional use. This course gives young people the key skills they need to enter the workplace, and also opportunities to create digital media, music and video.
Qualifications available include GCSE, OCR Nationals.
Life skills
Our life skills classes cover a range of social and practical activities that aim to increase students self-confidence and knowledge, and to teach basic skills that we all need.
Classes include sex education and drug misuse, papercraft, cooking, gardening and horticulture. Where we can, the vegetables are grown in the garden are used in cooking classes.
Qualifications which can be achieved are Level 1 Award in substance misuse and awareness and Level 1 Award in sexual health awareness.
Each year we also participate in Adult Learner’s Week in partnership with the Learning Trust. We run a “Grow, Cook and Eat” theme where the garden and kitchen is used to train people in gardening and eating healthily.
Music
Our music classes allow young people to work on an one to one basis with skilled musicians, learning music technology, keyboard, guitar, drumming or singing.
Our children that participate in these courses can receive qualifications in:
- NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft Using Music Composition
- NCFE Level 1 Introductory Award in Music Technology
- NCFE Level 1 Award in Music Technology
- NCFE Level 1 Certificate in Performance Skills Using Music
- OCR GCSE in Music (J535)
- OCR Nationals in ICT Level 2, Unit 22, Creating Sound
Pottery and ceramics
Working with Tado Ceramics Studio we offer children the opportunity to explore their creative skills in pottery and ceramics, and the chance to get one of the following qualifications:
- Certificate in Creative Craft Level 1 to Level 3
- GCSE Art and Design Ceramics
- Art and Design Level 2 and Level 3
Table tennis
We offer table-tennis coaching in ETTA Rookie, Improver, Player and Advance Levels. These courses build children’s self confidence by helping them achieve and progress their sporting skills.
Over 10 children have participated in these courses and received qualifications in Junior umpire Awards and Butterfly Skills Awards.
